It’s supposed to be a great weekend weather-wise in the Chicago area, so get out if you can and use your DVR for what I consider to be the top TV picks for this upcoming weekend (July 16-17).

5 p.m. (CDT), WTTW-TV — “Rick Steve’s Europe” — Rick is in Italy checking out the cities of Padua, Verona and Ravenna. In Padua, he checks out the venerable university there along with Giotto frescoes and the pilgrim-packed Basilica. In Verona, there’s Roman ruins to see and plenty for Romeo and Juliet fans. Ravenna provides shimmering mosaics and was once a western bastion of the Byzantine Empire.

7 p.m., NBC — “Nitro World Games” — As I have blogged before, I am a big fan of “Nitro Circus” after catching its program on MTV which has turned into a world tour, a couple of movies and even more television shows. Travis Pastrana and the best action sports athletes in BMX and FMX will push their skills in a variety of events in the first edition of this competition.

5:30 p.m., WTTW-TV — “Keeping Up Appearances” — This show was a staple on Channel 11 for many years on Saturday night. I found that it landed on Sundays and I’m glad. I consider it the best British television comedy ever. This week in “A Riverside Picnic”, Hyacinth sends her friends along the river to show them the best in gracious living even though it feels like a forced march. One of the series’ best episodes.
